The exquisite work by Olamide Bakare, Gèlè, is a brilliant illustration and a tribute to Nigerian culture and elegance of the feminine gender. In this masterpiece, the famous Nigerian headwear, gele is used as an emblem of identity, elegance and beauty rather than just being a form of dress.

In the image, Olamide Bakare presents the gele not only as a form of clothing but also as a sculpture that speaks volumes about resilience, elegance and strength. Bakare uses the complex design and fold of the gele to illustrate the long history of the headwear which at one point served to bring about a feeling of uniqueness amongst its wearers. Therefore, this image captures both aspects of traditional and modern Nigerian arts.

Lighting plays a major role in bringing emotions and moods in Bakare’s photographs. The soft glowing light in Gèlè helps in creating an atmospheric mood that brings the viewer close to the photograph. Furthermore, the contrast between the bright color of the woman’s skin against the dark background brings out more emotions in viewers. In addition, the subtle touch of pearl jewellery around the neck and wrist makes the whole picture more appealing.

It is worth mentioning that Bakare’s background in dancing and arts is reflected in his excellent photography skills. As a professional dancer for over 12 years and a creative director, Bakare decided to embrace photography. Thus, he was able to use his previous knowledge and skills in dance to bring out emotions and beauty of individual through the camera lens.

Apart from his artistic prowess, Bakare’s passion for developing the art scene in Nigeria is commendable. Over the years, he has offered his skills freely in areas of volunteerism, training and mentoring. Some of his notable educational accomplishments include workshops with world renowned photographers and institutions such as Joe McNally among others.
