Isa leads successful EIA lab & technical presentation for SPDC/Sunlink JV

As global attention intensifies on addressing environmental pollution, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have become indispensable tools for protecting ecosystems and communities.

In Nigeria, where the Niger Delta remains one of the world’s most environmentally sensitive oil-producing regions scientific precision, transparent reporting, and strict regulatory compliance are essential. In this demanding landscape, skilled professionals with strong chemical and environmental expertise are needed more than ever to play a critical role in ensuring sustainable and responsible development.

In a major stride for environmental compliance in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, industrial chemist and environmental scientist Isa Elabor successfully led the laboratory and technical presentation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the HI Development Project. The work, conducted by Jacio Environmental Limited, Nigeria, supported the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) Limited/Sunlink Joint Venture operating in HI Field, OML 144.

EIAs serve as a frontline defense against a wide range of environmental threats associated with oil and gas operations, including water contamination, soil degradation, air pollution, gas flaring impacts, improper waste handling, habitat disturbance, and long-term risks from oil spills and hydrocarbon leaks. By identifying these risks early, EIAs protect biodiversity, preserve water resources, prevent ecosystem decline, and safeguard public health.

The HI Project EIA featured rigorous environmental sampling and laboratory analysis of surface water, middle water, bottom water, and sediment matrices collected on September 29, 2020. Under Isa’s technical oversight, the field and laboratory teams carried out all procedures in full compliance with regulations set by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and other national and international environmental standards.

As Laboratory Supervisor, Isa led the entire analytical workflow, from sample collection and analysis to data interpretation and final report review. Under his leadership, the laboratory analysis team strictly followed environmental quality control and assurance protocols, ensuring that all results met global standards for environmental monitoring and impact assessment.

Isa’s expertise extended beyond the laboratory and field operations. He served as a key Team Lead representing the project’s laboratory analysts during the official EIA presentation to the DPR at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, on December 15, 2021.

Reflecting on the achievement, Isa noted:

“Environmental assessment is not merely a compliance exercise, but a scientific duty to provide sustainable development that safeguards both the integrity of the ecosystem and the health of man.” He added:

“This successful EIA presentation strengthened the joint venture’s commitment to operating the oil fields sustainably in the south-south region of Nigeria”

The approval and successful presentation of the HI Project EIA mark a major milestone not only for Jacio Environmental Limited and the SPDC/Sunlink Joint Venture, but also for Nigeria’s broader efforts to align with global sustainability frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. It demonstrates how African oil and gas operations can combine energy development with environmental responsibility.

Globally, the oil and gas industry faces increasing pressure to reduce environmental harm and improve transparency. Isa’s expertise highlights how Nigerian professionals are advancing world-class environmental stewardship, meeting the standards expected in Europe, North America, Asia, and beyond.
