Due to the constant neglect of the need to be punctual in our society and the institutionalization of the culture of what is known as “African Time”, Mr Otuekong Udoebom, a four hundred level student of Fine and Industrial Art, University of Uyo, has taken a sculpture design using fiberglass as his final year project to depict and display the importance of punctuality.

The work is intended to persuade his audience to do away with the culture of “African time” and embrace what he calls “Objective Time” as new way of life for a progressive society.
“ I got the inspiration from a philosophical concept known as humanism. Humanism, as we know, stands for the betterment of the human race. This work challenges us all to learn to be punctual, that is to consider time and take it serious because time, they say, is money,” the artist says in his statement.
This work titled “Time” directly speaks against procrastination as it is one of the plagues afflicting 90% of our people. “Time” is also an important message to all sectors of our life.

“This also touches the very essence of our ideas about time,” says Otuekong. “And we don’t have to procrastinate over our engagements. The piece is an enigma; it evokes a sense of fear, a sense of time consciousness and so many thoughts. It is also a way of telling people that it is time to take the arts and the artist into the center of things. It is another way of telling people that there is a sector that has not been fully exploited,” Otuekong said.
