DAMATURU – The residents of Yobe state have applauded the Federal Government for its intervention on the control of erosion and flood in some part of communities in Damaturu, the state capital with the construction of culverts and drainage.
Some of the residents of the communities who benefitted from the Federal Government projects told Saturday Vanguard at the site of the ongoing construction of culvert and drainage along Gashua road that the projects would save lives.
Mr James Musa, a resident of Ali Marami community said, “this is one project that has direct bearing on the masses, as you can see, this culvert and drainage will channel the rain water through the proper route which will go a long way to checkmate over flowing of water into our houses. We are looking forward to the completion of the project and equally want the Federal Government to extend this gesture to other local governments in the state which have been experiencing flooding during raining season”.
Another resident, Alhaji Adamu Mohammed, said ” This federal government intervention would bring a huge relief to the benefiting communities around the project areas. In fact we are very happy because after completion of this drainage , we will no longer live in fear of rain because every August which is the main raining season period in Yobe was like a nightmare as flood would submerge our houses, but with this project our areas will be free of erosion and flooding”.
The Supervisor of the projects in Damaturu , who did not want his name in print, assured that the projects, which were being undertaken in 12 communities in five local government areas of the state would be completed within one month. He then urged the communities to jealously guard the projects and prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the constructed drainage channels .
