
The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC has conducted a two-day training for police officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command on International Human Rights Laws and principles,IHRL.
The training which took place at the police officers Mess Asaba was geared at reminding the officers on the need for them to take cognisance of the rights of individuals in the line of duty as abuse or infringement on individual’s right could have a ripple effect on the force in general.
The training touched on all forms of violations on Human Rights and their implications as well as conducts of law enforcement agencies.
It was noted that torture and abuse of suspects and criminals are violations of their Human Rights with a reiteration on the need for suspects and criminals to be treated humanly.
It was also highlighted that supects have right to be informed of his rights, to inform the family of the suspects as well as opportunity to be heard promptly by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The participants were further reminded of their obligation to care for detainees under their custody with a call that the police are to protect the rights and lives of citizens.
Some of the officers who spoke on what they learnt at the end of the two-day training thanked the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC for the workshop and promised to reflect the knowledge gained on their job as well as educate their colleagues.
They said the training was a necessary reminder of their obligations to society.
The two-day training for police officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command on International Human Rights Laws and principles featured question and answer sessions to identify challenges they face while carrying out their duties and imbibe best practices .
