BENIN—Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has rejected the award given to him by the  Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Edo State chapter, insisting that he has not performed much in the health sector to deserve such an award.

The governor, who turned down  the award presented to him during the Annual General Meeting, AGM/Scientific Conference, 2018,  said it was too early for him to be receiving an award, when he has not done anything tangible to merit it.

Obaseki, who stated that he did not believe that he has done anything worthy to bag an award from the association, said the honour will be well deserved in the future  and not now as he has plans to reposition the health sector in the state.

He said: “It be unfair for government to leave healthcare services in the hand of doctors alone, the government is ready to invest in healthcare.

“My government is ready to train doctors. The state is committed to the training of health personnel in the 18 local government areas in the state starting with 20 doctors.”
