Gunmen burn down 2 Adamawa communities— Eyewitness

By Umar Yusuf

Yola—Gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, in early hours of yesterday, attacked two communities of Lawuri and Dong in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Demsa attack came even as the security situation in neighbouring Numan Local Government gets worse.

A local said: “The true situation is still not clear yet, as the attack is still ongoing. But security men have been deployed to the areas to maintain peace.

“The attackers are now marching towards adjourning communities. The entire Lawuri and Dong towns were completely razed to ashes.”

Meanwhile, Adamawa State government has expressed regret over the sad development.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ahmed Sajoh, said despite series of attempts by the government to bring the situation under control, insecurity in the areas has continued to escalate.

His words: “It is highly regretted that attacks occurred this morning after all efforts put in place by government, community leaders and security agents to forestall a breakdown of law and order in the area.”

He was, however, optimistic that with the deployment of security men to the areas, the situation will surely be brought under control.

The Commissioner could not, however, give the casualty figure, saying it was difficult since the attack was still ongoing.

Meanwhile, Numan, the third largest town in Adamawa State, has become a ghost town as it has been deserted, follo-wing renewed hostilities between the Bachama and the herdsmen.

Numan has been in crisis for two weeks, following the killing of over 45 under-aged Fulani.
