“Power Forward’’, a coalition of sports promoters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said it presented eight Nigerian representatives at the just-concluded Junior NBA Africa Festival in South Africa held in August.

This is made known on Thursday on the official website of the organisation.

`Power Forward’ a youth development programme in Abuja was formed in 2013 by ExxonMobil; National Basketball Association (NBA) and Africare, an NGO.

The focus of the coalition is on basketball, skills development and raising public health awareness among high school youths.

The fourth edition of the programme was concluded on Thursday in Abuja, with 10 schools participating directly in the basketball finals while another 10 schools participated in other activities.

According to the organisers, since inception of the programme, participating schools have been recording improvement in the game of basketball and leadership quality of the participants.

“Eight boys represented the Power Forward programme at the first annual Jr. NBA Africa Festival in South Africa from Aug. 1-Aug. 2, ahead of NBA Africa Game 2017 in September.

“Also, Marvelous Nwoko from Government Secondary School, Zone 3, Abuja, represented the programme at the 15th Basketball without Borders Africa Girls Camp in South Africa from Aug.2 – Aug.5.

“In a related development, Power Forward beneficiaries constitute 70 per cent of students’ leadership in participating project schools presently.

“The programme uses the game of basketball to teach and mentor 300 students from 10 secondary schools annually in Abuja,’’ it said.

According to the group, the final ceremony of the event on Thursday featured Jerome Williams, African-American Ex-NBA Star, who urged the secondary school participants to do their best in life and pursue their dreams.

Similarly, Frank Traore, Technical Director, NBA-Africa said “basketball helps to instill leadership quality in children, they should embrace it more”.
