Awka—THE Anambra State branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has reached an understanding with the Anambra Consensus Project, ACP, a non-governmental organisation, NGO, on ways of ensuring hitch-free campaigns for the November governorship election.
At their joint meeting in Awka, the two bodies said they would ensure that candidates of the various political parties adhere to non-violent electioneering campaigns.
The state chairman of CAN, Senior Apostle Tim Okpala and President of Anambra Consensus Project, Dr Emeka Eze, after the meeting, also presented a 10-point resolution in which they stated that they would ensure that only a true Christian leadership would be encouraged in the state.
Okpala said: “Our interest is to make Anambra State better and we are doing it with genuine intentions. We want to discourage fetish activities and emphasis on money politics. We want a government that will recognize the churches and promote the Christian faith through evangelism. We also want a government that will treat churches equally.”
He said though ACP had not told the Christian body that it would project any candidate, CAN and ACP would organise a debate for the candidates for the various political parties before the election.
President of ACP, Dr. Emeka Eze, in his speech, described the cooperation between the two bodies as the type that would lead to the emergence of a credible governor for the state in November this year.
Eze said: “We have not adopted any candidate for the election. What we did during our interaction with the former governorship aspirants was to bridge an existing gap in Anambra politics.”
