THE recent dissolution of the Anambra State executive of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is having its toll on the party in the state as Wednesday’s ward congresses that took place in other states did not take place in Anambra.
Vanguard visited the designated venues of the congress and found out that there was nothing on ground to show that the party had any activity.
Among the Wards visited were Awka Ward 5, which is the ward of the national secretary of the party’s caretaker committee, Senator Ndii Obi; Agulu Ward 2, which is former Governor Peter Obi’s ward; Otolo Ward 1, which is the ward of the state chairman of the party’s caretaker committee, Dr. Alphonsus Nwosu; Osumenyi Ward, which is the ward of one of the governorship aspirants, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu and Uga Ward 1, which is Chief Chris Uba’s ward.
Vanguard gathered that the reason for the failure of the exercise in the 326 wards of the state was because of the dissolution of the party executive on ground and, therefore, there was nobody to mobilize PDP members. PDP chairman for Dunukofia, Mr. Andrew Modilim, who is also the chairman of all local government chairmen in the state, said it would appear that PDP was not interested in the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.
According to him, the dissolved state executive of PDP had earlier issued the guidelines for the congresses at the ward, local government and state levels, adding that with the dissolution by the national headquarters of PDP, the party was no longer functioning in the state.
He said: “It has become a norm that anytime there is election in Anambra State, the state executive of PDP is dissolved, just to weaken the party and serve the interest of some people who pretend to be members of PDP, but working for other parties. Following this dissolution, our members are becoming disgusted and are leaving PDP in large numbers and it is unfortunate that this is happening three months to the governorship election.
“There was a congress of PDP in 2016 in the state and it was that congress that produced the present national secretary of the PDP national caretaker committee, Senator Obi, former governor Peter Obi and Prince Kenneth Emeakayi as delegates of the Port Harcourt national convention that elected Senator Obi as national secretary.”
“Many of us even have the belief that leaders of PDP are perfecting plans to support a candidate from another political party for the November election in Anambra State.”
