With the postponement of the canceled Sporting Federations elections to July 20, plans by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria to run its World Championships trials has been put on hold.

The trials were scheduled to hold this week, but from all reckoning it would have to wait till the AFN board is inaugurated on July 21 leaving the AFN only two weeks to get their acts together for the event billed for August 4-13 in London. The AFN was one of the sports federations affected by the cancellation of the June 13 elections in Abuja. The Sports Ministry has urged the yet to be inaugurated members to stay away from activities of the federations.

“We are still looking to holding the trials, but if that is not possible we would have to rely on our athletes who have already hit the championships qualification standards,” said an official yesterday. Already only a handful number of Nigerian athletes have qualified for the Championships. They include Blessing Okagbare (long jump and sprints), Ese Brume (long jump), Tobi Amusa (100m hurdles) Margaret Bamgbose (400m) and the women 4x100m team.
