SOKOTO—Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has approved the establishment of School of Basic and Remedial Studies to address continuous decline in the number and quality of students from Sokoto State that sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The decision was part of the recommendation of a committee headed by former INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, set up to look into ways and means of reviving higher education in Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states.

Consequently, the state Council on Emergency in Education adopted the recommendation and gave the go-ahead for the establishment of the school.

A statement by Tambuwal’s spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, said: “The school will offer quality training by qualified teachers, to shore up students’ basic skills to prepare them for examinations leading to university admissions.”

With this, all higher institutions in the state have been directed to stop remedial programmes for senior school certificate exam, SSCE, and IJMB.
