The National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) will on Monday, March 27th, 2017, join all theatre practitioners across the world to celebrate the 2017 World Theatre Day (WTD) with the performances of Osusu and Beyond the Garb.
Addressing the press in Lagos, the the Lagos chair of NANTAP Makinda Adeniran disclosed that the event which will be hosted by Lagos will take place at the National theatre Iganmu. The events kicked off with a perfomance of Moremi at the Freedom park on Friday and Saturday, and on 27th which is the D day, the programme will start with an advocacy with the theme, Theatre, a springboard for effective recovery from economic recession by 10.00 am at the National theatre. Speakers at the event which will be moderated by Tunji Azeez include, Ben Tomoloju, Toyin Akinosho, Greg Odutayo and Tope Oshin. This will be followed by two performances, first beyond the Garb, a production of Thespian Family Theatre by 1.00 and Osusu by Lagos State Arts Council by 5 pm at the National theatre.
Adeniran also disclosed steps taken by the body to revive theatre in the country, adding that the Akette festival, a festival that will help to document Lagos will take place in December this year.
The World Theatre Day (WTD), formerly known as, International Theatre Day (ITD), was declared in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in Paris, France, under the auspices of UNESCO, and the celebration has been centering on Theatre Arts and its relevance in positive global theatre development
