BENIN—Edo Forum of Patriots, a socio-cultural organization in Edo State, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for agreeing to renew pipeline protection contracts in the Niger Delta, saying the decision has helped in dousing tension in the region.

The forum, however, appealed to the President to assist Edo State Government in making the Gelegele port project a reality as well as the power plant project.

In a letter  to President Buhari, Vice Chairman of the forum, Austin Atakpu, said: “We deem it necessary to write to appreciate Your Excellency’s approval of three salient development issues in the Niger Delta region, namely: The renewal of  pipelines protection contract. The take – off of the Maritime University and the registration of hitherto non-captured modular refineries all of which are situated in the South-South region.

“We see your gesture as a masterstroke towards achieving needed development and peace in the Niger Delta and achieving further its attendant implications for our national economy. In the same connection, we will like to draw your attention to a similar economic growth opportunity with massive potentials in Edo State. We  are referring to the proposed development of our Gelegele port and power plant which many investors have indicated willingness to partner the government to build.

on mutually beneficial agreements models. We shall be eternally indebted to Your Excellency, if you would kindly approve that for Edo State.”
