By Abdallah el-Kurebe

Sokoto—THE Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Emplo-yees, NULGE, yesterday, inaugurated executive councils in the 23 local governments in the state.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Malami Ladan, the Commissioner for Local Governments, Alhaji Mannir Dan-Iya, said the state government was committed to the welfare of workers.

He said: “Governor Aminu Tambuwal has left nobody in doubt as to his fairness and sympathy to workers’ welfare. All entitlements and emoluments that are due to retired staff of the local governments, primary school teachers, serving and former council officials, have been paid.”

While urging workers to reciprocate the gesture by being disciplined, law abiding and productive, Dan-Iya called for the sustenance of the cordial relationship existing between unions and the state government.

Chairman of the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Aminu Umar, represented by its Secretary, Suleiman Dikko, commended the state government for paying outstanding pensions and gratuities of retired workers in the state.

Speaking earlier, Sokoto State NULGE President, Shehu Dange, said: “We are indebted to the state government for the prompt payment of salaries as well as the centralisation of payment of the salaries of the local governments.”
