ASABA—DELTA Security Network, an umbrella body of vigilante groups in Delta State, has opposed the recommendation of amnesty for Fulani herdsmen operating in various communities of the state.

Delta State Police Command and leaders of various Fulani groups, it will be racalled, last Sunday at a meeting held in Asaba, among their 12 points recommendations, recommended amnesty for herdsmen as a measure towards mopping up arms from the suspected ravaging nomadic herdsmen.

Rising from an emergency meeting, yesterday in Asaba, leaders of the group,  Itolddem Daghwere, Onwuamalieze Henry and Warri Eriques, said that granting amnesty to herdsmen would truncate the bill on nomadic farming that is before the state House of Assembly.

They warned that such amnesty programme would portend serious danger for the security of law abiding residents of the state, insisting that the nationalities of the herdsmen should be unveiled with a view to repatriating non-Nigerians who were said to be plundering their host communities.

They said that recommendation of an amnesty in a police report was alien to them, wondering if it was the militant herdsmen whose leaders claim to be foreigners or the defenceless Deltans who are the victims of their onslaught.

The group maintained that the 12-point report was conceived to kill the nomadic bill, which according to them, has reached public hearing stage at the House of Assembly.

They said that they would storm the streets in protest if the bill was not given priority attention, adding that the bill would guarantee the protection of Deltans and intelligence gathering on herdsmen’s activities in the state.
