Three big fitness trends in Lagos

Triangle (2)

Working women in  Lagos have become more sophisticated than ever, and while their predecessors made a blind beehive for the glass ceiling, today’s corporates  have ambitions beyond the boardroom, one of the strongest of which is the wish to be in the best physical shape possible.

The Fitbit trend

The wearable pace tracker has been around for a few years, but has now become an object of comradeship amongst the fitness-conscious set. Gone are the days when ladies simply joined a neighbourhood gym or got a personal trainer.

Rather, in this techie age, they form a group of ‘friends’ who live in the same neighbourhoods and compete on who walks the most. The competition is fierce and fitbits don’t lie.

Later, they meet up for healthy meals or share tips on whatsapp group

Organic deliveries

Being so much more conscious of what they put in their mouth and having such a bigger variety to choose from, today’s fitness buffs have a support system that ensures they get what they want when they want. Gone are the days when getting healthy food was like squeezing water out of a stone. Countless marketers now offer 100% organic salads and deliver to order, with some even working with apps.

Office groups

It is not unusual to have group meets in offices for a little activity during lunch break, but it has become a trend amongst the Lagos smart  pack to form permanent fitness groups and stick with them. Moreso, diet, fitness and weight loss professionals are feeding fat on the trend, taking advantage of office retreats and other activities on an official level.

According to Samuel Osei-Tutu, country manager, Mckinnon Nigeria, has many corporates persuaded that productivity is enhanced when employees are fitness conscious. While corporate buy in for this reason, however, company productivity is the last thing on the mind of participants.
