He, however, insisted that such criticisms should be based on facts rather than sentiments.

The governor spoke, yesterday, in Benin while declaring open the 2016 press week of the state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.

Obaseki, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, said: “Let us continue our cordial relationship. We are open to criticism. But make sure you get your facts correct before you criticise us.”

He also called on journalists to see the event as an opportunity for them to exchange ideas and acquaint themselves with contemporary issues, saying “Journalism is one profession that I have come to respect. But I respect journalists the more if they know what they are doing.  I always advise my friends to continue to read so that their knowledge will be deeper.”

While wishing the union a successful press week, he urged its leadership to do its best to promote the welfare of members.

The chairman of the event and Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, commended the state council for forming a common ground between the government and the Oba of Benin.

Igbe, who was represented by the Obasogie of Benin Kingdom, Chief Eduwu Obasogie, also urged media practitioners to continue to uphold the values of the profession.

He said: “At all times, imbibe that spirit of unionism, respect the government of the day and participate in all state affairs. In whatever you are doing, be very sure that you put it above your self interest. Investigate whatever you are publishing; do not publish what will bring you to your knees for an apology. “

Earlier, the state Chairman of the NUJ, Roland Osakue, noted that the the council would use the annual event to confer awards on some deserving Nigerians, including the governor as the grand patron.

Osakue also assured that journalists in the state would continue to discharge their constitutional duties in line with the established standards.

“On our part, the union has a commitment to promote all policies and programme of the new government, through objective and balanced reportage of all activities of the government,” he said.
