Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria, FOMWAN has charged the President Buhari led administration to show more commitment in driving Nigeria out of the excruciating economic condition as many women who have become breadwinner of their families are living in pain.

The association led by Hajia Amina Omoti made this known during a press briefing heralding the association’s 31st annual national conference held at the Mosque Hall of University of Lagos, Akoka, yesterday.

The conference which begins today at the Main Hall of the university, is themed: “Development for Peace and Security” and will be attended by eminent Muslims and delegates from all chapters of the 36 states of the federation and Abuja.

Hajia Omoti while addressing newsmen said: “ FOMWAN is deeply worried about the poor state of the economy. There is a lot of hunger in the land and women, many of whom have become breadwinners in their homes are worst hit.  We call on the President and his team to fix the economy so as to ameliorate the plight of the masses that voted and yearn for positive change.”

Explaining the reason for the choice of the theme of the conference, Hajia Omoti lamented that pockets of agitations in the South-South and South Eastern part of the country have impeded developments, adding that there cannot be any meaningful development without peace.

The immediate past Amirah of the association, Alhaja Lateefah Durosinmi also charged leaders at various level of governance to show more commitment in managing Nigeria out of economic recession, adding that empowering women and young entrepreneurs through provision of loan and grants will cushion the effect of the recession and ultimately grow their businesses.

Responding to questions from newsmen on Hijab, former Amirah and former Deputy Governor of

Lagos State, Alhaja Lateefah Okunnu stated that apart from the constitutional right of every female Muslim to wear hijab, she added: “Hijab is ordained by Allah, although the case is in court, nobody can stop the use of Hijab.”

The association also commended the anti-corruption stance of Buhari-led administration urging that cases against corrupt officials should be sustained and concluded in a fair manner to serve as deterrent to others.
