Senate laments ban on beans importation

By Chioma Obinna & Daniel Oduvwu

The Senate Committee on Health yesterday decried the three-year ban on Nigerian beans by the European Union, directing the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to urgently improve on the quality and find a lasting solution to the incessant rejection of the country’s commodities.

The committee also directed the agency to immediately improve on the content of its advertisement or risk non-consideration in 2017 budget.

Expressing displeasure on the ban during its oversight visit to NAFDAC in Lagos, the committee, led by Senator Lanre Tejuosho, said the ban on beans, on the grounds that it was damaged by pesticide, had denied the country revenue that would have been used to improve the country’s economic situation at the moment.
