Indian faces assault charge

The Managing Director of Ethylene Product and Lubricant Limited, Jay Keswani, was yesterday, arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Magistrate B. Osunsanmi, over alleged assault on one Faith Nwaneri, by hitting her face and inflicting injury on her left eye.

The 62-year-old Indian national was said to have committed the offence on August 12 at floor 19, Block 4, Flat 18, Bille Vista Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos. Keswani, who pleaded not guilty, was arraigned on a count charge of unlawful assault by the police.

The defence lawyer, Chima Nnaji, informed the court that the defendant had been in Nigeria for over 40 years and all his children were born in Nigeria. He also said that Keswani had invested in the country and employs 500 workers, who are Nigerians.

The lawyer told the court that the accused is a responsible person, who will not jump bail and urged the court to grant him bail in liberal terms. Meanwhile, the prosecutor, Inspector Imhonwa, did not object to the bail request.

The magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum, who must be gainfully employed and addresses and tax payment be verified. She adjourned the matter till December 15.
