OLEH—THE Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Delta State chapter, has said that it is working with stakeholders to get bailout funds to enable it clear backlog of salaries owed council workers in the state.

Chairman of the state chapter of ALGON, Sir Ithiako Ikpokpo, during the association’s advocacy visits to Bomadi and Patani Local Government Areas of the state, reiterated the preparedness of the association to give a new direction to the local government councils in the state.

“As ALGON, we are not unmindful of our responsibilities. We share in the pains of the workers and we know there is no way to get maximum results from them if their salaries are not paid. We are looking at all avenues, including sourcing for bailouts to ensure that their salaries are paid,” he said.

Soliciting the cooperation of stakeholders towards the attainment of financially viable local government system, Ikpokpo said: “There are obvious challenges. Let us have a rethink about our attitude towards the local government system.

“We must remember who we are and make the system work for all of us, for the benefit of mankind, so that tomorrow, you will be remembered for something.”
