Labour crisis looms in Polytechnics

By Chidi Nkwopara & Chinonso Alozie

OWERRI—A fresh industrial action is brewing in the nation’s polytechnics, if the federal and state governments fail to quickly resolve the 13-point demand of the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP,  before the end of this month.

The Zone ‘D’ Coordinator of ASUP, Comrade Chika Ogonwa, who read the riot act while addressing newsmen yesterday in Owerri, also disclosed that the union had already issued a one-month ultimatum to the government since July 21, 2016.

“We want to use this medium to call on Nigerians, who care about the future of our children to prevail on the federal and state governments to comprehensively address these challenges, as we may have no other option than to mobilize our members nationwide and embark on an industrial action, after August 21, 2016,” Ogonwa said.

While recalling that the last industrial action by the union scuttled academic work for nine months, the labour leader equally fumed that “two years have elapsed and yet, government has not come around to effectively address the union’s demands.”

Continuing, Comrade Ogonwa recalled with grief that several attempts by the union to engage responsible government officials to address the demands was met with lethargic response from them.
