Democracy is on trial in Abia- Gov Ikpeazu
Umuahia— Embattled Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state who was sacked from office on Thursday by a Federal High Court Abuja for alleged tax evasion declared yesterday that democracy was on trial in the state but vowed to challenge the court verdict up to the Supreme Court. Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja had in his judgement on Monday ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Ikpeazu’s challenger, Dr Uche Ogah and also ordered Ikpeazu to vacate office.
FG keeps mum as LPG, Kerosene, diesel prices soar
The economic hardship faced by Nigerians heightened over the last couple of weeks, as the prices of some petroleum products, such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas; kerosene and Automotive gasoline Oil (AGO) also known as diesel, recorded significant increase, forcing Nigerians to spend a huge chunk of their earnings on the essential commodities. In spite of several complaints and cries, the Federal Government and its agencies in charge of the sector, had refused to provide any explanation for the rise in the prices of the commodity, especially in the face of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s new foreign exchange policy which had helped narrow down the official and the parallel markets exchange rates.
DSS foils NDA’s planned bombing of oil pipelines
The Department of State Security Service, DSS, has recorded a major success against criminals posing serious challenges to the nation through attacks on oil installations and kidnap of prominent Nigerians for pecuniary gains. The DSS said last night that it foiled fresh planned attacks on vital oil facilities in the Niger Delta region by arresting the masterminds of the onslaughts before they were able to carry out their nefarious actions. A statement made available to Saturday Vanguard in Abuja by the security agency and signed by Tony Opuiyo, said the DSS also arrested no fewer than 15 kidnap kingpins from various parts of the country, including the man who kidnapped the Personal Assistant to the Transport Minister, Igo Chinda.
