MRS. Tokunbo Edun, Administrator, Grace Schools, Gbagada, Lagos, has described the Nigerian curriculum as superior and effective in developing the capabilities of the Nigerian child.
She disclosed this in a statement which stated; “Due to its potency in improving the learning experience of the child, as well as adapting the child to his/her environment, the Nigerian curriculum is the most appropriate to train the Nigerian child because the culture and norms of our society have utmost importance on the overall development of the child.
“In view of this, it is highly expected of all stakeholders in the education sector to ensure that the curriculum is accorded utmost priority in teaching the Nigerian child.”
The educationalist however decried the concentration on the British educational curriculum at the expense of the Nigerian curriculum, pointing out that the former is tailored to meet the needs of the British environment and its citizens.
“The British curriculum is not superior in learning to the Nigerian curriculum. The education garnered by a child has to help him/her live in any environment anywhere in the world. Why would a Nigerian child adapt to the British environment through curriculum and the child does not reside there?”
While emphasizing the commitment of Grace Schools to providing qualitative education by infusing innovative ideas into the curriculum, Edun urged government to focus on curriculum development as this is the only panacea to enhance qualitative learning in the country, as she called for a pro-active and workable approach to curriculum development in Nigeria.
