No fewer than five adults and four children were yesterday confirmed dead, after a commercial bus and an articulated truck collided in Fadeyi axis of Lagos State. Officials of the Emergency Response Team, ERT disclosed to Vanguard that five adult (4 male and 1 female) and 4 children( 2male, 2 female), died at the spot. Vanguard gathered that the accident which occurred at about 5:45 am, left other 10 passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

When Vanguard visited the scene at about 9 am, the State Emergency Response Team led by the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA were sighted extricating the victims of the from the damaged vehicle and truck. Other members of the ERT were officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Lagos State Ambulance Bus, LASAMBUS, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and officers of the Nigeria Police attached to the Onipanu Division.

Sources said that while the commercial bus was returning from a Northern state, the articulated truck was enroute Ikorodu. Confirming the accident, General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele, blamed the accident on overspeeding. Akindele explained that the commercial bus, a Toyota Hiace with registration number: KT 715 YG, was overspeeding and on approaching Fadeyi Bus stop, veered off its lane, hit the culvert and later collided with an upcoming articulated truck with registration No. GGE 715 YG.

His words, “A total number of 9 persons lost their lives in the incident. And 10 others have been rushed to the Emergency Trauma Centre at Tollgate along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.” The General Manager however, urged drivers to adhere to road codes and safety measures and avoid over speeding, saying “this will help prevent accident that often leads to loss of lives and property.”
