PORT HARCOURT—The Federal Government has been enjoined to breath life into the flag off programme it did in Ogoni, Rivers State for clean up of the area with the immediate commencement of the exercise.

Making the appeal, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, Secretary, Waste Management Society of Nigeria, WAMASON, Mr Anthony Oyedeji, described the flag off of the clean up exercise recently by the Federal Government as a demonstration of a strong political will to tackle environmental challenges in the Niger Delta region.

The group in its communiqué after its roundtable on “Ogoni oil Spill,” advised government to ensure transparency during the clean up, stressing that it will help achieve the overall objective of the exercise.

“Government must synergise with stakeholders through periodic advocacy and a transparent process to achieve the overall objective and aim of the clean up exercise.”

The communique by chairman of the roundtable, Mr Chris Ogidi, advised the Federal Government to set up an effective communication system during the exercise to acquaint stakeholders and others with all the developments, adding that best standards and guidelines should be put in place by NOSDRA in collaboration with other independent experts and relevant government agencies.
