UMUAHIA—THE Buhari South-East Youths Movement, BUSEYM, has condemned last week’s killing of scores of pro-Biafra activists in Onitsha, Anambra State, saying that the security operatives over- stepped their bounds.

The group warned that such uncivilized killings cannot achieve the peace and unified Nigeria being sought by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the group, despite pockets of crises in parts of the country, what was paramount for President Buhari was the unity of Nigeria.

Rising from its National Executive Council in Enugu, BUSEYM condemned the killings, saying that “the Police and other security operatives went too far in their rules of engagement.”

BUSEYM, however, cautioned any group agitating for the dismemberment of Nigeria to have a re-think, insisting they should present their grievances to the government in an acceptable manner for consideration.

A statement issued after the meeting and jointly signed by the group’s Director-General and National Publicity Secretary, Engr. Nwabueze Onwuneme and Mr. Igwe Samuel Obinna, respectively, noted that there is no law in Nigeria empowering security operatives to kill protesters.

“BUSEYM condemns in totality, the killing of our brothers and sisters by security operatives in some towns in the South-East geo-political zone on May 30, 2016. While BUSEYM also frowns at the activities of these youths who are agitating for secession, we make haste to add that there is no law that empowers Nigerian security operatives to kill protesters.

“Life is sacred, and due process must be adhered to in dealing with protesters. We further make haste to state that the relevant authorities must fish out the over-zealous security operatives behind these dastardly acts and punish them accordingly,” the group said.

“BUSEYM also uses this opportunity to appeal to our fellow youths and women of South-East extraction agitating for secession to come to the negotiation table to air their grievances and seek political solutions to political challenges.

“The socio-economic marginalization of the South-East geo-political zone did not start with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari,” the group said.
