PORT HARCOURT— GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has assured workers in the state that his administration will continue to give their welfare priority attention.

The governor, in a goodwill message to mark this year’s Workers Day, yesterday, enjoined the workers to always give their best to the state, and thanked them for their support to his administration. Meantime, Trade Union Congress, TUC, in the state has called on the government to take urgent steps to rescue the economy from total collapse.

Chairman of TUC, Mr Chika Unuegbu, said that the fall in the price of crude oil had created a major challenge for the nation’s economy.

He said that the government should evolve measures to avert job loss and incessant protests from the people over economic challenges.

“All sectors of the economy are bleeding profusely due mainly to the fall in crude oil price from $115 per barrel in June 2014 to the current level some $44 per barrel.

“The quest for economic revival and improvement in the lives of the ordinary people should, therefore, pre-occupy our minds. This is because, except very drastic actions are taken to fix the Nigerian economy, more jobs will be lost. More workers will be owed salaries. More students protests will take place and if nothing is done, then ultimately a revolution may ensue and our democracy will be threatened to its very foundations,” he warned.
