Those who embezzled public funds should be prosecuted, Cleric urges

Sokoto – Sheikh Yusuf Alibawa, a Sokoto-based Islamic cleric on Friday urged Nigerians to pray to God for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption in the country.

He made the call in his Jumma’at sermon in Sokoto, emphasising that it was necessary for Nigerians, irrespective of religious beliefs, to support the President in the fight.

The cleric also called for prayers “for Allah to expose any person or group of persons working against the fight against corruption.

“Anyone or group sabotaging the efforts toward curbing corruption should be regarded as our enemy, hence the need for all and sundry to commit such persons to God.’’

The cleric said it would be difficult for the President to succeed alone, hence the need for God’s intervention in the nation’s affairs.

Alibawa, who stressed that the country had all the potential needed to achieve greatness, noted that corruption and the current security challenges posed threat to the nation’s optimal growth.

He added that “we must rally round the anti-graft agencies to recover our hard earned funds from public officers who looted our treasury.

“Those who embezzled public funds should be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others who might want to do same.’’

He then commended the efforts of security agencies in the ongoing war against terrorism in the country.
