‘Creation of grazing areas will cause more crisis’

BY JOHN MKOM
JALINGO – The commissioner ministry of Agriculture Taraba state Dr. David Ishaya said the state government is yet to be informed on the decision of the federal government to create Cattle Ranches and Grazing areas in Nigeria.

The commissioner who spoke to Vanguard Newspaper on phone disclosed that the communication on creation of grazing areas and cattle ranches has not reach to the state government in any form.

Although the Dr. Da aid Ishaya pointed out that if cattle grazing areas and Ranches were created, it would reduce the rate of communal crisis between the cattle Rearers and other farmers, he lamented that constant crisis between the cattle Rearers and farmers has been a serious set back in the state.

“If Cows are restricted to their designated areas with facilities like water, it will go a along way by reducing the number of crisis which we use to experience between cattle Rearers and farmers”

Another personality in the ministry who spoke to Vanguard on the condition of anonymity said creation of cattle ranches would be a simple thing that could bring lasting peace in the state, he further hinted that introduction of grazing areas would be a difficult exercise.

The civil servant who was afraid to open up his personality for fear of bureaucracy said the state government under the administration of Jolly Nyame some years ago created some cattle ranches and exit roots at deferent areas in the state which were reserved for cattle rearing

“One of the most prominent cattle ranch in Taraba state is Gwakwe Cattle Ranch, it is located in Donga local government area of Taraba state, those places can be revived easily by the federal government”

“In the best of my knowledge, creation of grazing areas in Taraba state will cause more crisis because am sure people’s lands will be confiscated for grazing, such people may not remain happy with those who are grazing on the forceful confiscated land, with my experience here in Taraba, I smell more danger if the matter is not well handled”

“It will be so difficult to create grazing areas because no farmer here will like to give out his land which is hereditary for his grand children for grazing, it will also take serious compassion if the federal govern event want to be just” the civil servant pointed.
