AHI trains healthcare providers on reproductive issues

AS part of its commitment to  improve the health of Nigerian adolescents, Action Health Incorporated, AHI, has trained 25 healthcare providers and members of World Health Committee in Apapa Iganmu area of Lagos.

The 5-day training which aimed at building their capacity to provide youth friendly services and knowledge about the characteristics of adolescence and adolescent development was first of its kind.

Speaking on necessity of the training, the Programme Officer of AHI, Francesca Olusola said that it’s necessary for healthcare provider to be sensitive to the need of the youth and be friendlier with them.

“When you are friendly with youth, they will open up to you on their challenges and you will be able to advice them.

At the graduation ceremony, a member of the Ward Health Committee, Ijora Badia area of Lagos State, Mrs. Felicia Akolade who gave testimony of her personal experiences said many parents are guilty of scolding their children anytime they asked questions about reproductive knowledge.

Akolade stressed that with modern technology and several sexual transmitted diseases it will not be out of place to arm young people with reproductive issues.

The Chairman, Ward Health Committee, Olojowon Primary Healthcare Centre, PHC, Mr. Okeola Azeez noted that lack of proper education is fuelling unwanted pregnancy.

“We need to teach them about sex and the implication of unprotected sexual intercourse because if you don’t teach them, eventually they will practice it..”
