In order to further encourage the development of Squash in Nigeria especially at the grassroots level Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi celebrated his 60th birthday recently by hosting the first edition of the Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi U-19 indoor squash tournament which took place at the Lagos country club Ikeja Lagos.
The tournament had a total of 24 players, 16 boys and eight girls fighting for the first prize. In the boys category, Temilolu Adegoke warded off stiff challenge from Desmond Igoudala winning 3-0 (11-9, 13-11, 11-9) to win the 20,000 first prize while Busola Olatunji cruised pass Idowu Ogunyemi 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-4) winning 15,000.
Temilolu Adegoke, winner in the boys category stated that the final was a difficult one as Igoudala had been a consistent force in the tournament he also applauded the opportunity given to young Squash players in the state to horn their skills.
Chairman of the Squash session of the Lagos country club, host of the tournament Arc Funmi Bamkole believes that the gesture by the senator is one that should be applauded and followed by other well-meaning Nigerians saying that sport is a veritable tool in youth development.
“The senator has promised that this would be a continuous tournament and by next year he also promised to make it an open tournament where youths from every part of the country can be a part of”.
Sponsor of the tournament Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi an avid Squash player and fan said the tournament is an eye opener and one he hopes to continue sponsoring.
