Girl, 4, killed in Delta midnight fire

By Akpokona Omafuaire

TRAGEDY struck, yesterday, as midnight candle light induced inferno consumed a  four-year old  girl, sacked  seven families, a farm, Deeper life Bible Church and  a  school at Makro Street, Warri, Delta State.

The little Favour was identified as the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Paul.

An eyewitness, Abba Idogun, narrated  that the fire started as a result of a candle light  carelessly left   while asleep by one of the occupants of the compound located at 16, Makro Street.

Idogun, an Information Officer with Delta  State Ministry of Information, Warri Office, said the fire burnt  the  four-year-old  beyond  recognition, saying a private school, a church and a poultry farm were also razed.

Lamenting the  incident, one of the victims, Emmanuel Nwodo, a poultry farmer, said the fire started from his neighbour’s apartment in the compouand.

“It started from my neighbour’s place. We were  inside my room when I heard ‘fire, fire’. And  before I could come out, the fire was already raging.

“Maybe they left candle on and slept off and the candle just sparked big fire. That was just how the fire burnt everywhere. There is one man, a lady with three children. A little child of about  four years was burnt to death. Her name is Favour. “Very innocent girl but they could not rescue her. The fire started about 10:30pm.”
