Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmoud Mohammed, has expressed regret that the Rules of Court are used as impediments rather than as implements for smooth administration of justice. Speaking on the topic “The Future of Administration of Justice in Nigeria” at the just concluded Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, 55th annual general conference in Abuja, Justice Mohammed called on lawyers to have a unity of purpose.

I am glad about the recent recruitment into the police but that recruitment should not be limited to the rank and file. There are practicing lawyers that can be engaged, trained and retrained, who will come in, not as rank and file policemen. They could be promoted and empowered to deal with these challenges so that the capacity of the police to use the tools of science in investigation is achieved. This will enhance capacity. I will not draw an arbitrary line; we will only be concerned with crimes that took place within the past few years.
