BANKS shut for fear of robbery

Between, commercial banks in Ijebu Ode and Ago-Iwoye, were shut for several days for fear of robbery attacks. The banks refused to open  when the armoured personnel carrier used by the Police to give them protection from bandits was not deployed shutting down commercial activities in the area.

Before the advent of the present administration in the State in May 2011, all banks within the Ijebu axis were not operating due to security concerns. Findings ,however, revealed that the APC donated by Governor Ibikunle Amosun to the Nigerian police was not functional.

Obasanjo snubs Jonathan in Abeokuta

Another event that shook Ogun State was when former President Olusegun Obasanjo allegedly dodged the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan during the latter’s visit on January 2 Obasanjo was reportedly driven out in his black SUV and one security Hilux van. He shunned his main entrance and made use of his private gate of the palatial Hilltop building immediately Jonathan arrived the state capital.

It was observed that some security personnel  detailed at the former President’s house suddenly disappeared but a source close to Obasanjo’s Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta had earlier disclosed to Vanguard that President Jonathan was not in Obasanjo’s itinerary for the day.

Ijebu monarchs snub Jonathan in Ijebu-Ode

Facts have emerged on February 21 that Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona and other Ijebu monarchs failed to take group photograph with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan when he paid a courtesy visit prior to the 2015 presidential election. One of the highly respected monarchs in Ijebuland, who was part of the meeting, confided in anguard that they are not hungry monarchs who could easily be bought over with the President’s dollar.

The Ijebu monarchs were said to have been angered by former PDP National chairman’s comments describing the Ijebu people as stingy people. He was angrily corrected by Awujale, who said’”We are not stingy, but prudent in our spending.” Jonathan was also said to have tactically ignored the requests of the Ijebu people at the meeting. 11 students killed in road accident

Students die in road crash

Eleven students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, were crushed to death along Sagamu/Benin expressway in Ilishan Remo North Local Government area of the state on Friday, June 26 when a Lagos-bound Toyota Haiace passenger bus with registration number XV 311 MUS (LAGOS) collided with a truck marked BDG 779 XE (LAGOS), resulting in the death of all the occupants except Ibukun Akinbo who survived with degrees of injuries.

Few days later, students of the school stormed the premises of the company which they believed owned the truck that killed their colleagues, pouncing on the workers and destroying property when they observed that the company’s workers were still working and loading products even when some dead bodies were still lying in the morgue’s of various hospitals.

Akarigbo celebrates 25th coronation anniversary

Week-long activities were lined up to commemorate the 25th coronation anniversary of the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Michael Adeniyi Sonariwo took the state to a standstill. The ceremony with an interdenominational Christian thanksgiving service on Sunday, July 19 and ended on July 26 with performances from ace musicians, King Sunny Ade and Dapo Oyebanjo.

Dignitaries that grace the grand finale of the anniversary include Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, former governor Gbenga Daniel, Oba Sikiru Adetona among others.

Robbers rape patients, nurses in Ogun hospital

Patients and nurses in a private hospital, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State, had a taste of horror when a deadly gang of armed robbers numbering more than 10, stormed the health facility in the night of Saturday, September 5, robbing them of their property before going ahead to rape the females among them.

But luck however ran out on eight of the suspected robbers as they were later arrested by policemen attached to the Igbeba Division of the state Police Command after they allegedly robbed and shot dead a man identified as Alayande Oladipo at Olisa Street, in the town.

Ijebuland agog for 2015 Ojude Oba Festival

The town of Ijebu Ode was agog on September 26, 2015 as dignitaries from all walks of life trooped into the town in their numbers to celebrate the annual Ojude Oba Festival which is fast becoming Nigeria’s most attended festival, and annually hosted by the paramount ruler of Ijebu land, His Royal Majesty, the Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The event which took place at the Dipo Dina International Stadium opposite the Oba’s palace, was filled with traditional dance, cultural displays and colourful attires of the participants and as usual, all the groups and families go round the venue acknowledging cheers from the people before mounting the podium to pay homage to Oba Adetona.

The event was graced by prominent Nigerians which included the Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosu, Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson, former Defense minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), Ogun State deputy governor,   Mrs. Yetunde Abosede Onanuga, former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel, former Bayelsa State governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, elder states man, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, former senators, Gbenga Kaka, Olurunimbe Mamora, Olabyi Durojaiye (Ijebu indigene) and Daisy Danjuma, Musician, Queen Slawa Abeni, billionaires Oskar Ibru and Olorogun Dr. Sunny Kuku, who is an indigene of Ijebu land and Otunba Subomi Balogun.

Cop, pregnant woman killed as robbers raid six banks in Agbara

A policeman and a pregnant woman were confirmed dead when armed robbers numbering about 20 visited about six banks at the Agbara Industrial Estate area of Ogun State, on Thursday, November 19, 2015. At each bank, the gang, despite not meeting any resistance, they blew open the doors and the vaults with dynamite and packed the loot in their millions, after holding the staff of the bank hostage.

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police, Special Intelligence Response Team (SIRT) has arrested one of the suspected leaders of the gang identified as Kelly Rotor at a wedding ceremony after a heavy shootout between detectives and members of his gang at Sapele, Delta State.

Death and burial of HID Awolowo

Matriarch of the Awolowo clan, Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, died on Saturday, September 19, two months short of her 100th birthday. She was buried in a gold casket on November 25. The remains of the late matriarch were laid to rest beside her late husband inside the Awolowo Mausoleum. The funeral service was well attended by men from all walks of life.
