Army, Lagos dominate Minimah’s Boxing tourney

The Nigerian Army Team and team Lagos Boxers at the weekend won 3 gold medals each to dominate the just concluded maiden Kenneth Minimah National Men and women Open Boxing Championship held at the indoor Sports hall of the National Stadium from June 29th – July 4th 2015.

Fighting in the Red Corner, Caroline Linus of the Nigerian Army out punched Chioma Nwakpa from Edo state 2 -1 in their 51kg weight category bout to set the Army on the victory part while Kehinde Obareh who also fought from the red corner defeated Dupe Akinola from Rivers state 3 – 0 to win the women 6okg weight category thereby retaining her national title in that division.

Glasgow 2014 common-wealth Games bronze medallist, Edith Ogoke –Agu completed the victory song for the soldiers when she beat hard fighting Jacinta umunakwe 2 -1 to win the women 75kg weight category bent to also retain her National title.

Lagos boxer, Azeez Dauda beat Rasheed Oyekunjo from Ogun state 2 -1 to emerge Champion of the 49kg weight Category while Taiwo Abiodun also from Lagos state who fought from the red corner, subdued Lukman Akinolugbade of the Nigeria Police force 3 -0 to emerge tops in 62kg weight category bout.

The third gold medal for Lagos state came from Rilwan Oladosun who out punched Kazeem Soyoye from Ogun State 2-1 to win the male 60kg weight class.

Another commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Efe Ajagba from Delta State, showed some of the stuff he is made of when he out punched Lagos boxer, Segun Ibrahim 3-0 to win the super heavyweight fight.

In other bout, Ekele Danuloko from Kogi state scored a round threeTechnical knock-out over Nosa Nehikhare from Oyo state in their 81kg bout while Cross River state pugilist, beat Toyin Adeyemo from Lagos 3 -0 to win the women 69kg weight division.

President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation Keneth Minimah, who was represented by the Vice President, Ibrahim Zango, thanked everyone that contributed to the success of the championship especially the boxers. Unlike before when bouts are hardly staged, the president reaffirmed his willingness to sustain the championship in order to discover more talents for Nigeria.

The GOC of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army Lagos who was represented at the finals by Brigadier General  Y.P Auta appealed to boxers to maintain discipline wherever they are.
