ABEOKUTA—Textile traders in Itoku market in Abeokuta have taken their complaints over the seizure of their textile materials by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service in the state to the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Leader of the market women, Chief Alimot Akamo while briefing  members of the Assembly at a workshop held for the members-elect of the Assembly, lamented that, Customs officials were frustrating them with the incessant seizure of their goods which she said were usually procured from Kano.

Chief Akamo, who led some of her members to the workshop which was organised by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission, DAWN, appealed to the lawmakers to “rescue us from huge debts as a result of illegal seizure of our goods by the customs.”

The Area Controller of the Customs in Ogun State, Comptroller Haruna Memudu, however, said that the fabrics were smuggled into Nigeria by Chinese merchants from neighbouring countries into warehouses in Kano from where they were bought and taken to the Itoku Market by traders from the state for resale.
