US returns stolen 17th century books to Sweden

Two antique books dating back to the 17th century, stolen in Stockholm in the 1990s and sold to Americans by a German auction house were returned to Sweden on Wednesday, US officials said. US authorities handed back the books, intercepted by the FBI from a bookstore in Manhattan and from Cornell University, to the National Library of Sweden at a ceremony in New York.

Ramadan:165 inmates pardoned ahead of Ramadan

Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah al-Sissi, on Wednesday, in a symbolic gesture that coincides with start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, pardoned 165 young Egyptian prisoners. An official report from Cairo said the 165 pardoned also include people convicted of committing unspecified offences and some for violating a disputed protest law.

13 die, 53 injured in Maiduguri as picked explosive device detonates accidentally

At least 13 people were killed and 53 others injured in northeast Nigeria when an explosive device detonated, a health official and vigilantes helping the military against Boko Haram said Wednesday. The device was picked up by one of the vigilantes as they travelled back to the town of Monguno, in Borno state, from a military operation against the Islamists in Marte, 40 kilometres (26 miles) away.
