OWERRI — Women of Obiangwu autonomous community in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State have pleaded with the Police High Command and Imo State government to unearth and prosecute those behind the gruesome murder of the House of Assembly candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Andrew Uqwuezumber.
President of Obiangwu Development Union, Women’s Wing, Mrs Rose Anyawu, made the appeal yesterday after leading other women in a peaceful demonstration through some villages in the community.
“The untimely death of Andrew Ugwuezumba has brought severe hardship to members of the immediate family and unimaginable pain to the entire community,” Anyanwu said.
The woman leader said women were not satisfied with police investigations so far, stressing that they would not relent until the perpetrators were arrested and made to face the full weight of the law.
She said: “Honestly, Obiangwu women are not satisfied with the way the investigation is going on. We will not relent in our legitimate demand until the perpetrators of the crime are arrested and made to face the law.
‘’We will not stop protesting until the government and the police do the right thing for the community.”
Speaking also, brother of the deceased, Mr. Stanislaus Uqwuezumber, lamented that not much had happened since one person (names withheld) was arrested in connection with the murder.
“The security agencies ought to show more commitment in the case to prevent the people from taking laws into their hands,” he said.
Vanguard recalls that Ugwuezumba was murdered along Imo Airport road on his way home after a political meeting in March 2015.
