Gabon won a three-country contest against Algeria and Ghana on Wednesday to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament. The result of a vote among 14 Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee members was announced mid-afternoon in a Cairo hotel after the three candidates made short presentations. The Gabonese were co-hosts with neighbours Equatorial Guinea of the 2012 Cup of Nations.

SENATE President, David Mark, yesterday ruled out the possibility of him defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC, which will have the majority members in the 8th senate, saying that he had no reason to jump ship.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday warned politicians against instigating crisis in the country, saying that the Federal Government will not condone any attempt by politicians to foment trouble while pursuing their personal ambitions. The president issued the warning through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, at a news briefing with State House correspondents in Abuja.

An unidentified young man with earphone on, was on Wednesday killed by a passenger train at Cappa area of Oshodi, Lagos. The man was standing on the rail track oblivious of the fast approaching train. The Ogun-Lagos-bound mass transit train was leaving its Oshodi station to Mushin when the accident occurred.

Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye has called on the President-Elect, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) to call All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Ekiti State to order before they truncate democracy in the country.
