LAGOS—PROVOST of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, Mr. Gbemiga Ogunleye, has said plans were on to carry out reforms in the institute to improve its capacity and quality as a degree-awarding institution.

He also noted that as the premier journalism institute in the country, NIJ is contributing immensely to Nigeria’s journey to nationhood.

Ogunleye, who was recently appointed provost of the institution, said this yesterday in Lagos during a courtesy visit to Vanguard corporate headquarters.

He said: “NIJ has been around for a long time. The institution has a vision to be the leading Mass Communication and Journalism training institution in Africa, and that dream is being realized.

“We have witnessed significant improvement in the life of NIJ, particularly since it was elevated to a degree-awarding institution. Our students have been participating in the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

“That was not possible when the school was awarding OND certificate. So there is consistent growth at NIJ.

“We have had uninterrupted academic session since the NIJ was made a degree-awarding institution, while our curriculum is of the best academic standards.

“However, there is room for improvement. The support of every stakeholder is needed in this regard. This support is very important given that NIJ is a major contributor to national development.”
