The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, yesterday, issued an on-grid 1,080 MW generation license to Oma Power Generation Company Limited.

The Chairman of NERC, Dr Sam Amadi said at the ceremony that the gas-fired power plant will be located at Orgwu-Ogwe, Ukwa West, in Abia state.

Dr Amadi described the granting of the 1080MW capacity license as an ambitious project” It is an ambitious venture, but doable.

It is on record that Egbin Power station located in Lagos, is the first generation company in history to have been issued a licence of such magnitude. It will also be recalled that the Commission recently issued license to Zuma Energy Nigeria Limited, to operate a combined 1,200MW coal power plant in Itobe, Kogi state.

Oma Power Director, Business Development, Tim Onomiwu assured the Commission that the licence terms will be adhered to. He said that the company’s development partners, namely GE and Geometrics are at the stage of negotiating project agreement and finances and that the plant will be built in three phases.

Those in attendance at the ceremony include, the Commissioner, Legal Licensing and Enforcement, Dr Steven Andzenge and Mary Awolokun, who is heading the Engineering division as well as the company’s delegation led by the Director, Business Development and Project Finance, Tim Onomiwu.
