Ado Ekiti—Teachers operating under the umbrella of Nigeria Union of Teachers in Ekiti State has cautioned the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to desist from dragging them into politics, saying they have no regret in voting massively against his government during the June 21, 2014 governorship election in the state.

Fayemi and Fayose

According to the statement signed by the state chairman of NUT, Comrade Samuel Akosile in Ado Ekiti yesterday, its members had every reason to vote against Fayemi for allegedly introducing anti-teacher policies during his four year regime in the state

The body was apparently reacting to a live radio programme recently where some people posing as teachers castigated governor Ayo Fayose for allegedly inflicting suffering on them in his policies and programmes in the state

They, in the programme went further to apologize to Fayemi for voting him out during the election

While denying the fact that his members had any input to the programme, Akosile described those who rendered the apologies as Fayemi’s apologists and not members of the union

“In as much as we do not want to be dragged into politics because we are civil servants and unionists, we feel constrained to ask ex-governor Fayemi and his apologists who deserves apology, Fayemi or Ekiti teachers in this matter?

“Do we need to apologize for refusing to sit for an examination that was meant to retrench us?

“ Do we need to apologize for going on strike for demanding for our rights over the payment of 27.5 per cent?

“Do we need to apologize for standing up as a union to oppose policies that were inimical to educational development and teachers’ welfare?”

The NUT chairman described the statement credited to All Progressives Congress lauding the teachers for showing remorse and tendering apologies as uncalled for. Akosile said the teachers are having a better deal and have not been subjected to any dehumanization under Fayose to warrant any lamentation by his members.

Fayose not to probe

Meantime, Governor Fayose has said that the call by some people to probe the former administration will not be heeded.

According to him; “I am not going to run after anybody, the energy I will use in doing that will be used to do better things. I am taking the necessary steps to retrieve all that have been taken away.”

He has also said that his administration will soon provide 20 new patrol vehicles, armoured personnel carriers and other items for the state police command to boost security in the state as the nation eagerly awaits the conduct of February general elections and tackling the issue of insecurity.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the governor said in as much as it was imperative of his administration to make Ekiti a crime free state, he would always support the Nigeria Police and other security agencies in tackling the security challenges in the state.
