Akure—THE family of the medical doctor of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owo, Ondo State, Dr. David Oguntua-se, who died in the Akure inferno, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, saying it no longer has confidence in the state police officers handling the matter.
Oguntuase died in the fire that gutted his private clinic in Akure on Christmas Day.
The petition by the brother of the late doctor, Otunba Ben Oguntuase, urged the IG “to compel full investigation into the incident with a view to iden-tifying the perpetrators and bringing them to book.
“If done, justice would not only be served and serve as an expression of condolences, it will also provide the fortitude the family needs to bear the horrific loss of unimaginable proportion.
“The last thing known of the Consultant Paediatri-cian at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owo, was that he went to his clinic at Araromi area of Akure in the evening of December 24, 2014, but the charred remains of his body were found in his completely burnt down clinic.
“We complained to the ‘A’ Division of the Ondo State Police Command, from where officers came to visit the scene.
“Clearly, what was discovered at the scene of the incident pointed in the direction of assassination and arson given the state of his body and the condition of the building.
“We were, however, surprised to read in the media a statement credited to the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command that the death was due to fire caused by electric surge, thus giving the impression that it was an accident.
“In particular, he was also alleged in the media to have confirmed that scores of people sustained injuries in the midnight inferno.
“As far as we know, the state fire service has not been invited by the Police in Akure to visit the scene and we also know that other than the victim, no one was injured in the fire.”
