Kunle Afolayan’s award-winning film, ‘October 1’ which carted away three awards at this year’s Africa International Film Festival, AFRIFF, is set to make another history as it tops the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCA, 2015 list with 11 nominations.
The film which premiered on September 28, will be battling for the awards with films such as “Invasion 1897” by Lancelot Imasuen, “The Meeting” by Rita Dominic,AY’s “30 Days in Atlanta” and “A place in the Stars.” While “October 1” is shortlisted in 11 of the 27 categories, “A Place in the Stars” and “ The Meeting” got 10 and 6 nominations respectively. Lancelot Imasuen’s “Invasion 1897” got 3 nominations as well as “30 Days in Atlanta”, which got 4 nominations.
Other nominees include, Gideon Okeke, Richard Mofe Damijo, Frank Donga (real name Kunle Idowu), Mercy Johnson, IK Ogbonna, Ireti Doyle, Wale Ojo, Mike Ezuruonye, OC Ukeje, Ivie Okujaye, Joselyn Dumas and Linda Ejiofor.
Announcing the nominees on Wednesday were popular on-air-personalities, Nick Mutuma of Mashariki Mix and Sika Osei of 53 Extra during a special live broadcast on all Africa Magic and Maisha Magic channels. With them in the studio to discuss the quality of this year’s entries was renowned writer, film maker and AMVCA judge, Mr. Femi Odugbemi.
Written by Tunde Babalola, produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan, “October 1” talks about Nigeria on the verge of independence from British colonial rule.
