The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has promised to ensure that the entire gamut of the Nigerian extractive industry gets a boost for an increased contribution to the growth of the national economy.

The apex body of geoscientists and mining engineers in the country is worried that the extractive industry has not been able to attain its full potentials especially as sectors like mining and steel development have not received considerable attention and commensurate growth like the petroleum sector has done over the years

The society dropped this hint while unfolding plans for repositioning the society to effectively perform its leading role as the mouth piece of the geo-science industry in the country. The President of the society, Professor Clifford Teme said the NMGS would do all in its capacity to push for an even distribution of growth among the segments of the extractive industry as it believed they are all potential goldmines.

He noted that all sister organisations including the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the Nigerian Association of Hydro-geologists (NAH), the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS), the Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers (NSME) and the Nigerian Association of Engineering Geologists and Environment (NAEGE) are not left out as they have been co-opted in the collective effort to expand the frontiers of the extractive industry in the country

“I am happy to be the President of the greatest body of geo-scientists, mining engineers and metallurgists in the country. Before now, I have served in the executives for many years. As president now, I think am delighted to put in my very best in doing what I do best that is to serve the society where I belong and take it to greater heights. And in doing this we will put passion into it. Though my first year is gone, I think the achievement recorded during this period speaks volume, he said.”
