THREE suspected terrorists who last month attempted to blow up Calabar-Itu head bridge have been arrested by security operatives in Akwa Ibom State

The suspects were identified as Samuel Coleman Yaw, a Ghanaian resident in Bakassi Local Government Area in Cross River State; Monday Anthony, an indigene of Ikang village, also in Bakassi Local Government Area and Boronyefa Olorogun, alias General Bofa.

Briefing newsmen at the state command headquarter, in Ikot Akpan Abia, yesterday, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong, said the suspects were arrested on October 5, after intensive surveillance by the Police and the Department of State Service, DSS.

He said: “On 20/09/2014, the command received information that a group of aggrieved terrorists planned to blow up the Calabar-Itu head bridge. Upon thorough and intensive surveillance, two of the suspects, Samuel Coleman Yaw, a Ghanaian resident in Bakassi Local Government Area and Monday Anthony of Ikang village also in Bakassi LGA in Cross River State, were arrested.

“The mastermind, Boronyefa Olorogun, alias General Bofa, escaped but after a rigorous search by a combined team of Police and DSS Akwa Ibom State, the suspect was traced and arrested in Yenogoa, Bayela State, on 17/10/2014. The suspects have admitted to commiting the crime.

“The following items were recovered from the suspects: Six super power 90 explosives; five blasting laps, three rolls of detonating cords, one bundle of extra detonating cord, and one Honda Accord 1997 model.”

The Commissioner, who explained that the suspects would soon be arraigned in court, listed other achievements of the command in the last one month to include arrests of 10 suspected kidnappers, two pirates, child traffickers and recovery of three vehicles.
