Jang goes to Senate

Gov Jonah Jang of Plateau State

By Marie-Therese Nanlong

Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State had for long been alleged to be interceding on who would succeed him in office. However, while he prayed on who would succeed him, few bothered to ask on the governor’s own future.

That was, however, put to rest last week with the news that Governor Jang would be doing a swap with the incumbent senator for Plateau North, Senator Gyang Pwjok. With Pwjok taking the governorship, Jang would take Pwjok’s seat in the Senate.

To give vent to the governor’s desire, a coalition of youth groups in Plateau State last weekend bought and presented the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Senate form to the State governor, urging him to represent the Plateau North Senatorial zone in the National Assembly.

The youth groups’ representatives handed over the form to the governor’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Francis Bot at the Government House in Rayfied, Jos and passed on their assurance and support, urging him to continue in the good work he has been doing for the State.

Speaking separately at the event, some of the youth leaders including Sunday Gini of the Plateau North Political Front, Nansat Bitrus of the National Youths Council, Kevin Pam of the PDP Youth Network among others stressed the gesture is in appreciation for what the governor has done for youths in the State.

The trio maintained the governor has been carrying the youths along in governance as witnessed in his willingness to “anoint” a youth to take over from him in 2015.

According to Bitrus, “The youths not only in Plateau North but the entire State is fully in support of the governor going to the Senate, necessary support will be given to him because he has been standing by the youths.”

Pam added, “You can’t change bad politics to good if good people continue to stay on the sideline. Credible people should come in and change the face of politics to something desirable not only in the State but Nigeria.”

Responding after the receipt of the form, Governor Jang thanked the youths for the gesture saying it is historic to make such a giant stride.

The governor who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Francis Bot reiterated, “I do not have zonal politics in mind. What the youths have done is very historic, I will not disappoint the people of Plateau.”
