ABEOKUTA—Politician son of a former governor of Ogun State and a  member of the House of Representatives, Olumide Osoba has said that  empowering the people should be part of the legislative duties.

Osoba who is representing Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi-Owode Federal constituency  in the state at  the lower chamber said this  at the empowerment  programme for about  120 people in his constituency.

Osoba who spoke in the presence of the state deputy governor, Prince Segun  Adesegun said the gesture  was a way to encourage  the people whose votes brought him to  power.
“Because of the way things are in the country, I felt there should be a  way to encourage people in the small and medium enterprises and the only way  I could do that is to empower them.

“It is also a way to appreciate the people that voted me in and as well to empower them.
“Representative’s duties entails lawmaking where you pass motions and bills in the House and then we have committee duties  where we oversight different ministries, agencies and departments.

“The appropriation for the country is another duty, where the executive brings the budget  estimate and we fine-tune it and thereby becoming the budget for each year.
“If a young man has a vulcanising machine, he can become useful to himself  and not be idle. If a woman has a deep refrigerator, she could  start making ice blocks, just like a welder with a generating  set will use it effectively for his job,” he said.
